From the Streets to a Second Chance: Pelican

Pelican didn't arrive at our door. He arrived in traffic.

In April, police had to stop cars on a Lake Worth road just to bring him to safety. It was a chaotic entrance for a dog who had clearly known nothing but chaos for a very long time.

When Pelican first came into our care, the condition he was in told a story no dog should ever have to live. He was severely emaciated, his body worn down from what was obvious long-term neglect. His skin was raw and painful, covered in open wounds, flaky and dry from demodex mange, with little to no hair left anywhere on his body. His nails were so overgrown it was clear they had never once been trimmed.

This didn't happen overnight. This was long-term suffering. A clear and undeniable case of neglect that went on for far too long.

Despite everything he had been through, Pelican was one of the gentlest souls we had ever met. Calm, sweet, and remarkably trusting from the very moment he arrived. More so than any of us could have expected. He reminded us all of just how forgiving dogs can be, even after experiencing the very worst of humanity.

From day one our team got to work.

Medicated baths, antibiotics, antifungals, and around the clock love and attention. Slowly but surely Pelican started to respond. By early May he was eating well and gaining strength. As of this week his skin has improved dramatically. His coat is growing back more and more each day and the dog who arrived nearly hairless is transforming right before our eyes.

The difference is nothing short of remarkable.

Pelican is doing so much better. He is stronger, healthier, and finally living the life he always deserved. Our medical team is with him every step of the way and we could not be more proud of how far he has already come.
