Cruelty-Free or Not? A Shopper's Guide to Brands That Test on Animals and the Ones That Don't

  • 2 min read

Every year, an estimated hundreds of thousands of animals including: rabbits, mice, guinea pigs, and even dogs like beagles are used in product testing around the world. The good news? You have power every time you shop.

Why It Matters

Many companies don't test on animals directly, but they still fund animal testing, usually because they sell in markets that require it or because their parent companies conduct testing. Animals in testing labs can endure procedures that include, but are not limited to, painful skin and eye irritation tests, force-feeding studies, and lifelong confinement. None of it is necessary. Thousands of ingredients have already been proven safe, and modern alternatives like lab-grown human cell tissue and computer modeling are more accurate than animal tests.

How to Shop Cruelty-Free

Look for these symbols on packaging:

  1. The Leaping Bunny — the gold standard, requiring no animal testing at any stage of product development.

  2. PETA's "Cruelty-Free" bunny — certifies the company and its suppliers don't test on animals.

  3. "Not Tested on Animals" rabbit — Choose Cruelty Free certification.
