From Research Facility to Freedom: The Ridglan Beagles' Journey Home

More than 1,600 beagles are finally getting the chance to experience what it means to simply be dogs.

In one of the largest beagle rescue efforts in recent history, Big Dog Ranch Rescue, alongside the Center for a Humane Economy and numerous rescue partners, helped secure the release of beagles from Ridglan Farms.
The Beginning of a Historic Rescue
After months of advocacy and negotiations, an agreement was reached to secure the freedom of more than 1,600+ beagles from Ridglan Farms.
What followed was a rescue effort unlike anything most people have ever seen.
Before a single dog could begin the journey to safety, every beagle had to undergo a full medical examination, receive vaccinations, be microchipped, and be issued a health certificate for transport.
In an extraordinary effort, the dogs were examined, vaccinated, and microchipped in just seven days. A temporary medical facility was established inside a Wisconsin barn allowing veterinary teams and volunteers to work around the clock preparing the dogs for their new lives.

Moving 1,000 Lives to Safety
Transporting over a thousand dogs across the country required an enormous coordinated effort.
Teams arrived through the night while volunteers gathered during late-night and early-morning hours to welcome each new arrival. Buses and transport vans worked continuously to move the dogs safely from Wisconsin to their next destinations.
Five transport buses traveled nonstop for seven straight days, carrying hundreds of beagles toward freedom.
The first major transport brought over 300 beagles to Big Dog Ranch Rescue. Additional groups continued arriving in the weeks that followed as the operation expanded. A second release later brought another 135 beagles to freedom, drawing national attention and earning coverage on ABC World News Tonight with David Muir.
An Army of Support
Rescues of this scale are never accomplished by a single organization.
More than 200 volunteers worked around the clock to care for the dogs, coordinate arrivals, manage logistics, and prepare them for the next chapter of their lives. Support poured in from across the globe. More than 3,200 donors contributed to the mission, with donations arriving from 40 U.S. states and 16 countries.

Additional support came from countless partners and advocates, including the Karuna Foundation, iPaw Rescue, Jill and Rich Chaifetz, Denise and Dave Breazanno, and members of Lauree Simmons' family. Operation H.E.E.L. founders Cindy and Matt also opened their agility building to serve as a staging area for rescue pickups, providing critical space during the operation.
Discovering Life for the First Time
For many of the Ridglan beagles, everyday experiences were completely new: rain, grass, swimming, toys, and the freedom to run.

Within days of arriving at Big Dog Ranch Rescue, staff and volunteers began witnessing remarkable changes. Just thirteen days after arrival, many of the dogs were eagerly waiting to go outside, wagging their tails when people approached, and beginning to show individual personalities.
Two weeks after their release, many were experiencing joyful zoomies, playful interactions, and growing confidence.
Others remained cautious and reserved, something entirely expected for dogs whose lives had been shaped by confinement and limited social experiences.
Day by day, they continued finding their voices. They learned how to play with toys, they discovered friendships and volunteers watched countless floppy ears bouncing through the grass as the beagles raced around play yards for perhaps the first time in their lives.
The Road Ahead
The response from the public has been extraordinary.
Adoption applications began pouring in almost immediately as people across the country stepped forward to give these dogs the loving homes they deserve.

While each dog's journey will look different, their futures are no longer defined by the place they came from. This rescue was never just about moving dogs from one place to another. It was about giving more than 1,600 beagles the opportunity to experience life beyond laboratory walls.
A chance to simply be dogs.
