When Should You Bring Your New Puppy to the Dog Park?

Although you may be eager to bring your new puppy to the dog park, following the steps and precautions is important. Before bringing your puppy to the park, the first step is ensuring they have had all their vaccinations. This is usually done by 16 weeks of age, and even with their complete vaccinations, they are still vulnerable to picking up a disease from other dogs.

It is a good idea to start taking your puppy to dog parks as soon as it is safe, as this is a great way to socialize your pup with other dogs. The goal in doing this is to raise a dog-friendly puppy. If your dog is already an adolescent, start with fenced parks or have them drag behind a long leash you could grab if necessary. Teen dogs are more likely to ignore your commands to come or even run off into the street if distracted.

Aside from choosing a suitable dog park and watching the time, you can do a few other things to ensure your dog’s safety and happiness. For example, it is best to leave your dog’s toys at home, especially those that are squeaky or have treats in them. Toys can cause an unwanted stir in a dog park, and it is best to avoid this in the first place. Bring food is another big “don’t” when taking your dog to the park. Like toys, it is best to leave food at home because you don’t know how dogs will react when food is introduced. Lastly, remember to follow the rules of the park, always be on the lookout for your dog, be prepared for anything, and have fun!
